Family sessions with young children are rarely perfectly still and honestly, I never expect them to be.
Betsy and her husband brought their four boys to Savannah Rapids Pavilion in Augusta for a playful summer family session filled with movement, laughter, chaos, and the kind of moments parents are usually too busy living in to fully see while they’re happening.
And somehow, in the middle of all the running, wrestling, and exploring, there was still so much softness woven throughout the evening.
Family Photos Do Not Require Perfectly Behaved Children
One of the biggest concerns mothers usually have before family photos is whether their children will cooperate long enough to actually get good images. And honestly, especially with young boys, sessions almost never look perfectly calm from the outside.
This session was playful from beginning to end. The boys were running, laughing, climbing, exploring, and constantly moving, but those moments are exactly what made the gallery feel so genuine and full of life.
As an Augusta family photographer, my goal is never to force children into stiff poses or expect perfection. I want families to interact naturally so their images actually reflect this season of life honestly.
Why Waiting for Better Light Was Worth It
Originally, we had planned this session for an earlier evening, but the weather quickly turned dark and gloomy. While it technically was not pouring rain, the heavy clouds completely changed the feeling of the light.
One thing I always guide my clients through is understanding how much light affects the final look and feel of their images. Soft sunlight filtering through the trees creates warmth, depth, and softness that simply cannot be replicated on a dark stormy evening.
I’m so glad we chose to reschedule because the light we ended up with at Savannah Rapids made such a difference in creating the soft and timeless feel Betsy was hoping for.
Letting Children Lead the Session Naturally
Some of my favorite moments from this session happened completely in between poses. One little boy wanting to run ahead, another climbing into mom’s arms, brothers roughhousing together, and everyone laughing through the chaos of it all.
Those are the moments families usually end up loving most later on because they reflect what life truly looked like during this season.
Sessions with multiple young children are never about creating perfection. They are about preserving connection, personality, movement, and the way your family feels right now.
Planning Your Augusta Family Photography Session
Savannah Rapids Pavilion is one of my favorite locations for family photography in Augusta because it offers such a beautiful combination of greenery, open walking paths, soft evening light, and space for children to move naturally throughout the session.
For families with toddlers and young children especially, choosing a location where kids can explore and play naturally makes such a difference in helping sessions feel relaxed instead of stressful.
If you’re looking for an Augusta family photographer who focuses on storytelling, movement, and creating timeless images without expecting your children to sit perfectly still, I would love to connect with you.
